PERSONAL TASTING NOTES

Deep and expressive, with dark forest fruit, black cherry and subtle earthy notes. The palate is lively and energetic, with hints of mushroom, fine structure and a long, savoury finish.

VINIFICATION METHOD

100% Pinot Noir from south-facing hillside vineyards in Saint-Aubin. Around 60 ares of the vines are approximately 60 years old, while 23 ares are around 7 years old, planted on gravelly clay-limestone soils. The wine is vinified in truncated-cone wooden vats, with 80% destemmed grapes and 18 days of maceration, followed by 11 months of ageing in 228 L barrels.

MEET THE WINEMAKER

DOMAINE DERAIN

Domaine Derain was founded by Dominique Derain and his wife Catherine in Saint-Aubin in 1988, after Dominique trained in winemaking around Burgundy. The estate became one of the early references for low-intervention and biodynamic viticulture in the region, working around 5.5 to 6 hectares in and around Saint-Aubin.

Julien Altaber first joined Dominique in the early 2000s and gradually became his close assistant and friend. Carole Schwab joined the domaine in 2006. When Dominique stepped back from the estate, Julien and Carole became the natural successors and took responsibility for the vineyards and wines.
