PERSONAL TASTING NOTES

A deep and complex red with dark berries, dried herbs, black olives, black pepper and subtle spice, layered with Mediterranean floral notes and earthy tones. Structured and elegant, with fine tannins, deep volcanic minerality and a long, savoury finish.

VINIFICATION METHOD

Made from a historic mixed vineyard planted in 1896 in Contrada Bardazzi, at around 600 metres altitude. The 2022 Madrenera is based on Nerello Mascalese with a mix of old varieties from the same vineyard. Fermentation is spontaneous in small open vats with a long maceration of around 21–28 days and daily manual punch-downs, followed by gentle manual pressing. The wine is then aged in small fiberglass vessels and rests in bottle for at least 12 months before release.

MEET THE WINEMAKER

FABIO SIGNORELLI

Fabio Signorelli is a Sicilian winemaker and oenologist from Mazara del Vallo, where he grew up around his grandfather’s vines. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Palermo, he worked across Sicily, Montalcino and Umbria before moving to Mount Etna in 2010.

On Etna, Fabio spent several years working as an oenologist and vineyard consultant for established producers. This gave him time to understand the mountain’s different contrade, local growers and the way Nerello Mascalese changes with altitude, exposure and volcanic soils. He began producing wines under his own name in 2016.
